Do we really know what an F-number is?

I have just read an article with this title: So You Think You Know What An F-number Is. Brian Auer gives a detailed description of the relationship between F-number and aperture in his post with some scary :-) mathematical background.

    SCARY??? No way! The really scary stuff is inside the engineering textbooks! I was actually thinking about picking one up just to see how much I really don’t know about this stuff. I’m glad you found the article worthwhile, though. Hopefully I didn’t go too overboard with the math and such.
