Project Results - Blog Statistics - Search Terms

Posted by photonovice on March 26th, 2008

Few weeks ago I initiated a project on blog statistics asking photography related bloggers to share what interesting, stupid or otherwise special search terms they encounter when checking their blog statistics.

I received entries from too amazing ladies (and of course I list my entry too :-) ):

Submitter: Anthea Brown
Blog: Lilahpops
Article: What my blog statistics reveal about you
Search terms: vintage camera, voigtlander vito manual,
resize image iPhoto, special effects on iPhoto and homemade pergolas

Submitter: Lynn Little
Blog: Mom Snaps
Article: Blog Searches
Search terms: Dirty Mom Photo, Photo hunt DS

Submitter: Tibor Radványi
Blog: Photonovice.net
Article: Cheap Professional Photography Equipment?
Search terms: cheap photography equipment for professional

Was this project successful? I do not know, since I haven’t defined any success criteria for it. See, I’m still not a pro. :-)

But I’m definitely happy because I received entries for this project from two great bloggers.
Anthea of Lilahpops has been writing her blog for almost a year now in a charming style creating valuable content for her readers. I’m sure her blog is growing in popularity since she is writing her posts with care and in good quality. She’s just made the first page for instance of photographyvoter.com with her article on combining Flickr photos with Feedburner feeds.
Lynn of Mom Snaps is a busy mother and hobbyist shooter with the notable intention of learning about photography first and upgrading her gear only after that. The fact that her blog was found by someone by searching for Dirty Mom Photo definitely shows something about interests of human beings around the Internet and also the limitations of today’s search engines.

And surely I’m a bit disappointed because there have been relatively few entries to this project. There might have been several reasons for it:

  • The topic was simply not interesting for other bloggers.
  • Pro bloggers are not that interested in blog stats or search terms found in their blog stats as I am. :-)
  • Bloggers are keeping their stats in secret.
  • Bloggers have way too many ideas and topics to write about and they have already scheduled their writings on other things in advance and just could not find the time slot for this one.

Despite the all these I will announce the second chunk of the Blog Stats Project soon. :-)

Update: Based on Neil’s post below I add one more possible reason for the few entries:

  • Lack of promotion of the project.

    Hi there!

I’m sorry I missed your project, I wasn’t aware of it till today. I learned of it through the post on Anthea’s blog. I think it’s an interesting idea, and wish more photography web people had participated, as a cross-community tally of what our viewers are searching for could have been very useful for all of us. Perhaps you could make this a quarterly project, and as your audience grows, more people may participate. I’ll be subscribing to your blog, and if you do run this project again, I will definately write a post linking to you!

Anyway, here were my top ten search terms and tallies over the last 12 months:

    extension tubes - 310
    macro extension tube - 180
    macro extension tubes - 171
    extension tube - 121
    light painting - 118
    sakura blossom - 104
    loreo 3d lens - 71
    3d babes - 70
    loreo 3d - 68
    sakura blossoms - 67
    neil creek - 62

Obviously hardware review type posts were very popular, making up 6 of the top 10 searches. Sakura blossoms also seem to be a popular search, bringing me traffic even though the search terms showed no interest in photography. The last two were my name, which is great as a photographer trying to build a name for myself, and perhaps a typical internet search for “3d babes”. Naturally I carefully chose “babes” as a keyword for the post for this very reason, even though the post is about anime figurines :)

Listen. Do not have an opinion while you listen because frankly, your opinion doesn?t hold much water outside of Your Universe. Just listen. Listen until their brain has been twisted like a dripping towel and what they have to say is all over the floor.
